Our Hojicha (sometimes spelled houjicha) is a Japanese green tea made from leaves from Kagoshima, south of Japan that have been roasted at a high temperature in order to minimize the astringency of tea leaves and to add roasting aroma. The invention of hojicha was by a Kyoto tea merchant in 1920 who had a batch of aging tea he didn't want to waste. Nowadays, Hojicha is widespread in Japan.
The amount of caffeine in hojicha is greatly diminished, if not negligible. This is because the roasting changes the properties of the tea.
Although everyone can enjoy hojicha, the drink is often served to children and the elderly in Japan. It also can be drank in the evening, and even before going to bed.
